Burhan al-Din Gharib, Shaikh

Burhan al-Din Gharib, Shaikh
A disciple of Shaikh Nizam al-Din Auliya who was for some time in charge of the kitchen in the Chishti monastery at Delhi. He willingly submitted to the austere lifestyle prescribed for the disciples of the great shaikh, which is also suggested by his nickname gharib (poor, humble). Nizam al-Din Auliya had nominated him as one of his deputies having the authority to enroll disciples. After his preceptor's demise (1325), Burhan al-Din migrated to Deogir (renamed Daulatabad by Muhammad bin Tughlaq) where he established a Chishti monastery. He is reported to have enrolled many disciples in the Deccan. One of his disciples, Shaikh Nizam, is reported to have persuaded Raja Nasir Faruqi (1399-1437) to name the new town the latter founded in Khandesh as Burhanpur in his memory.
